So today is my friend Derek’s birthday and he’s turning OLD today. So congrats, Derek. I hope your night is filled with Brooklyn brown ale in and around your belly.

So he is also (hopefully) receiving sister cats today! I’m very excited about this because when I visit him and Heidi in Nashville August, I get to play with these kittens! So this blog is not only dedicated to you, Derek, but also to cats around the world. But more specifically, it’s dedicated to Derek’s new kitty cats. Welcome to the fam!

So I have compiled some funny (the humor of these videos can be debated, I guess, but I laughed) videos of cats that other people who like to make fun of cats has made. Cats are funny, what can I say? So I have some videos, some LOLCATS photos, and a few of my own lolcats pictures. ENJOY!

Have you ever seen a cat stretch out on their backs on the floor? THEY’RE LONG! So here’s a video of people thinking this longness is funny, especially when blown up out of proportion and made to look like horror creatures akin to godzilla and king kong (the original longcats).

Kittens are adorable. Here is a homemade version of the “lolcats.” Lolcats is a site where people post funny picutres of cats and then other people put headliners underneith with bad grammar, such as “can i has” or “i is”. This is called “lolspeak” or “kitty pidgin.” No joke. It apparently parodies the bad grammar common in internet slang. Here’s a cute kitty, though.

Activities: Talking to foreign people, wishing I lived outside of the U.S., wishing I spoke French, wishing I was a good blogger, reading travel books/blogs, and memorizing useless Yosemite facts and telling these facts to anyone willing to listen. Especially if they’re foreign.

Why would I be a good Survivor candidate?? Here’s why:

I am extremely athletic. I bike ride daily, so my calves are really strong. Yes it’s an incumbent bike, but that just means that I’m good at saving my energy so that I can be stronger in other challenges! So when I’m done riding my bike, I can then do an arm challenge because they will be so rested!

I’m a really good photographer. I’m really in touch with nature, as well. I could probably figure out how to grow vegetables and sustain myself for 39 days.

Being an animal who lives in nature myself, I am very comfortable doing just about everything in the woods. I do not need toilets or running water to survive.

I could probably climb to the top of that tree.

I am very social and great at making alliances! I’m extremely likeable and I’d be willing to talk to anyone! And if you have an accent, even better because I probably know something about your country! I’d also be willing to back stab someone, if I had to. I’m in it to win it!

I would even be willing to eat this here butterfly if I had to for a challenge. Or better yet, just for protein!

I could probably jump over this log. Probably.

I could walk briskly across this prairie. I don’t run, but you should see how fast I can go on my BIKE! And I never get tired riding it because it’s not really exercise, so if I had to I’d still have energy to finish the race while walking! Briskly!

Did I mention how athletic I am? I can raft! Look at me in action! I would dominate in challenges!

So choose me, Gary, to be a contestant on the next Survivor! I am amazing.

In summary: I am as sharp as a tack – mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. So choose me, Gary!

It’s true – such a place exists. But how? Nestled in mid-Eastern California, these blocks of granite have formed and we decided to call it a National Park. We even decided to include it as a Natural Wonder of North America, along with the Grand Canyon and Niagra Falls. The wonder is, “How did this place come to exist, and why do we value its beauty so much?”

So I had my own reflection on this question. While at the park, I wrote out a mini-dialogue between three people that explored this question. These are fictional characters (names I like) and a fictional conversation. Although, some lines I may have heard here or there that I thought were interesting. Here it is:

[Claudette, Adam, and Valerie are standing at Glacier Point looking into Yosemite Valley]

Claudette: These mountains are just as real as we are. No more, no less.

Adam: Maybe a little more.

Valerie: I’m not made of granite.

Claudette: We give these mountains meaning. Just as we make each other real, we do the same to nature. We are both alive to our understanding of what being alive means. It exists because we make it exist. It is beautiful because we say it is. It is not inherently beautiful, peaceful, alive, or real. We say it is. Not even a mountain can escape judgment and social construction.

Adam: But there is a universality to nature. It is beautiful, spectacular, unbelievable. Just look at Half Dome. It’s a fucking natural wonder of the world.

Claudette: Only because we created that list and put it on it. It is not inherently beautiful.

Adam: How can you deny its beauty?

Claudette: Avalanches.

Adam: It is peaceful and serene. It is white noise. It is OM.

Claudette: Earthquakes.

Adam: Well this mountain here – rain, snow, or shine, is beautiful. It’s on postcards. People travel thousands of miles to see it, or to climb it. Why would millions of people spend money just to look at something?

Claudette: Because people tell them to. Half Dome is popular culture.

Valerie: Bears.

Claudette: Valerie understands. This mountain is a piece of art that we humans decided was valuable.

Adam: But there is no way we could have molded it. I mean, it has been here forever.

Claudette: There is no such thing as forever.

[play song because this is the song I was listening to while reflecting and writing, so hopefully it explains the tone and mood of the conversation better]

Adam: Even if the first people to see this mountain put a certain value upon it, how could it be that everyone who has seen it thereafter has the same opinion? There has to be a universal beauty or realness to it. How can it fit everyone’s standards?

Claudette: It only takes one value judgment or opinion. One admission price. One T-shirt design.

Valerie: Bear attacks. Mosquitos.

Claudette: Universality does not exist.

Valerie: Rainy days. Frostbite. Heat stroke. Sickness.

Adam: I understand what you’re saying. You’re saying everyone has different lived experiences which affect their outlook on something. For example, everyone who looks at this mountain is looking at it through their own, individual lens. Their experience with this mountain or place determines their opinion and value on it.

Claudette: Exactly.

Adam: You’re still not explaining something, though.

Valerie: Deer attacks. Falling down a hill.

Adam: Bad experiences can’t explain everything. How is it that nearly everyone finds peace in nature? People look at nature as beauty, despite negative experiences. Even if someone hiked this mountain when they were sick. Once they were better, they wouldn’t look at this mountain and put a negative value upon it. It would still be beautiful. The sickness wasn’t nature’s fault.

Valerie: Hail storm.

Adam: At the moment it may seem unattractive or disruptive, but after the hail storm, after the heat wave, is what is important. Everything gets better eventually. The beauty is still there underneath.

Claudette: All it takes is one person in your life telling you that nature is beautiful and that work is hectic and stressful. I’m sure that some people look at mountains as hectic and stressful when they have to cross them, such as the Donner Party and the Sierra Nevadas. I’m also sure that some people find work to be peaceful and beautiful, such as a painter or singer. Everything is relative.

Valerie: Lipstick, plastic surgery, high heels.

Claudette: All beauty is relative. Socially constructed. But you already knew that, Adam.

Adam: But why Half Dome and Yosemite? Why not any other mountain range? Why not Mount Rainier in Washington?

Valerie: It is big, and made of granite. It’s unique.

Claudette: The same reason why Picasso is famous and sells his paintings for millions of dollars. We determine its value.

Valerie: Transvestites are unusual and unique, yet hold a lower social value. Some people are big in size and also hold a lower social value. But no one is made of granite. Why can’t we value humans as we do nature?

Claudette: The question of how something receives its value in society is one that sociologists and philosophers have been grappling with for many years.

Adam: How did this mountain turn into a nature versus nurture debate?

Valerie: What doesn’t?

Claudette: I wouldn’t call it a debate, only because there can’t be a winner. It’s more of us trying to reach an understanding from both ends. Neither of us are experts on either end, so we’re sort of starting from the middle of “it’s beautiful, but why?” and working our ways outward.

Valerie: It’s spectacular.

Adam: Okay, so many of us, because of our ancestor’s dependence on nature, have been socialized to find beauty in nature.

Claudette: That’s one way of looking at it.

Adam: How does that explain deforestation or water abuse?

Claudette: Values. We value nature when it’s convenient for our well-being or for relaxation. However, we value certain luxuries more, such as paper, running water, and driving cars. Those, to us, are necessities.

Adam: But so are trees and lakes and rivers.

Claudette: Which is exactly why we preserve the pretty ones.

Adam: Yet we use nature to calm us. It’s still abuse in a way. We use it to benefit us, and only us humans. Even camping can’t be good for nature.

Claudette: I guess if we truly valued its beauty, we’d leave it alone and never look at it. But that’s not how it works.

Adam: Yeah, because we’re greedy.

Claudette: It provides more for us than just natural resources.

Valerie: Calmness, relaxation, peace. We always want more and more.

Adam: But it’s at nature’s expense.

Claudette: Everything we do is. We can’t do anything without harming something. It’s impossible. Yet we weigh benefit and harm. Only when harm truly outweighs benefit, then we might consider ceasing that action.

Valerie: Oil.

Adam: There is no way my socialization is making me say this is beautiful. There is no way this sight takes my breath away only because someone told me it should.

Claudette: Never underestimate socialization. However, it’s not that black and white. There’s always a combination of the two.

Valerie: The sun’s setting.

Adam: It’s larger than life itself.

Claudette: Life is only as large as we make it.

Valerie: Just stop talking for a second.

Adam: Despite negative experiences, this view is inherently beautiful and valued.

Claudette: Without us, it’s just a rock.

Valerie: Seriously, stop talking.

Adam: Stop? But we haven’t yet reached an understanding. Val, maybe you could settle this. Why is Half Dome so beautiful?

Claudette: No, why do we perceive it as beautiful?

Valerie: Because it is nothing and everything. This is the closest thing to God you’ll ever encounter. Fucking enjoy its vastness, greatness, and how it makes you feel small and insignificant. Sometimes you need to just feel like you don’t matter so much. To feel like you don’t matter more than this moment, at least.

[All stop and stare as the sun sets upon Half Dome and the valley gets dark]

Valerie: Unless someone’s blind. I’d be interested in hearing about their experiences in Yosemite.

But right now I just recorded for my friend a song that I’ll hope to record this summer in San Jose, and this is the rough draft with just guitar/vocals. I wrote the lyrics this morning – it’s called Don’t Walk Under Ladders. Tell me and my band whatchoo think! Or what kind of instruments you imagine hearing in the polished recorded version.

And tomorrow I have to perform a skit for italian class. The premise is that I’m going to be playing this song, called Canzone Del Sole by Lucio Battisti. Then my skit partner is going to be my ‘biggest fan’ and be a creepy stalker. It’s great. Then she gets sad that I won’t be her best friend, so I give her this big spiel about how when I was a kid I was also in love with a singer. But with that love, I picked up a guitar and learned to play so that I could make others as happy as I was. So I suggest to her to pick up the guitar and to “sing a song for me, for you, and for Italy.” That’s the part I wrote and “talk” in the middle of the song. Enjoy!

It could be argued that right now we are having a difficult time maintaining social order (which is the ultimate goal of classical sociologists), and may even say we’re in a state of chaos, but what exactly does that look like? Survivor gives us a look at this chaos on a small scale and over a 40 day period. In short, I love this show and am learning so much from it. Now I just need to get a PhD in Sociology so that I can teach a course called “Survivor: The Ultimate Society.” Okay, I’ll work on the title, but you get the idea.

So who will win the title of SOLE SURVIVOR?

Russell – He’s ruthless, smart, unloyal, immoral (at times), strong, a male, and white. (cut throat – think big business)

Jerri – She’s a white woman who has been riding Russell’s coat tails this entire game, but who has made secretly sneaky swing votes (Danielle) that may or may not help her chances.

Parvati – She’s a strong and intelligent white woman who makes her own decisions in terms of strategy while playing a very social game. She’s also very loyal and trustworthy, but at the same time would do anything to win.

Colby – He’s a white male who is being used for his weakness and vulnerability. He has not made one good choice in this game and is only here because the villains think he will be easy to vote off when the time comes because he is no threat whatsoever. However, if he gets into the final 3, he will win b/c the entire jury is his team.

Sandra – a woman of color who understands the game and makes her own decisions. She is not afraid to face the big businessman and usually comes out successful because of it. She relies on her own vices and is a strong competitor. She has a positive chance she could win this season.

THE SHOW
• Russell’s ideal top 3 is him, Sandra and Jerri? I am pretty confident Sandra would win because she tried to have positive social relations with the heroes when Russell didn’t even try. Basically I just don’t have faith that, judging who is in the Jury, people will honor his game-play for what it is rather than for who he is.

• I hated Parvati the first two times she was on the show because all she did was flirt and had that stupid laugh, but this season I have no option but to really respect how she’s playing the game. She takes the game into her own hands and really proves to be an independent and strong woman. Her concentration during challenges is amazing!

• Why would Colby give a surrender speech if he wanted to stay in the game? I guess he’s going for “I’m so weak, so keep me around,” but Russell is smart in knowing that Colby would then win if he got into the top 3. Get rid of Sandra? Well I’d rather see her win the $ than Colby, so I’d want to keep her.

• “This is Survivor; you can’t believe nobody” – Sandra. Well said.

• THANK YOU for getting Colby out. I couldn’t stand his weakness/vulnerability.

• I always fast forward past this hike through the cemetery of dead past survivors. Kinda cheesy.

• Omg – Russell won Immunity! That was intense! My heart was racing!

• It’s hard to say if Russell would win against either Parv or Sandra. They are both past winners and are both strong.

• WOW RUSSELL AGAINST SANDRA AND PARVATI? Well, he’s the only one who hasn’t won the million, and he’s guaranteed a vote from Jerri (hopefully)… but wow. That was bold. I could see Parvati winning. What do you guys think?

• Sandra really shed some truth on the game. She uses this game to make a living and to make money. You do what you have to do to survive in both society and life. That’s the truth. Also, she’s good at the game and it’s a passion. Follow your passions and strengths and you’ll find a way to make money.

• Wow – Parvati, Russell, and Sandra. Three amazing competitors. I’d be happy if any one of them won. However, I’d prefer Rus or Parv. Parv because she’s a powerful and independent woman, and Rus because he’s just amazing.

• This tribal council has been very insightful. Here are some key things I took from it:
It comes down to how you treat people
There are lies and then there are dirty lies that go too far (cross the line)
It’s easy to be manipulative to get ahead (social advantage)
Looking at the way the Jury talked to Russell, I’m assuming none of them will vote for him. It’s nearly impossible to be able to respect that type of game. That is, it’s impossible when you’ve been hurt by him and you’re directly connected to his manipulation. I’d be surprised if he got a single vote.

• Prediction: Parvarti

• Hands down, greatest season yet. The ultimate social, mental, and physical game.

• WOW SANDRA. THAT’S AMAZING. Russell totally underestimated her. Family values and loyalty prevails. Also, look out for the best interest of the tribe (ie get rid of Russell) and you’ll gain respect. Also, every move she made was in hopes of maintaining social order while satisfying her individual interests. Her winning shows that individualism prevails in our society and that if you want to be successful, you need to be strong willed, independent, social, loyal, smart, strategic, humble, and you need to look out for yourself WHILE looking out for others. She didn’t look at people as helping her to the end, but rather looked at others as votes in the jury. It’s not about getting to the top if you can’t stay there. She’s a leader a lot of people could trust and respect. That’s what people look for in people in top positions. It’s hard to lead when the people you have authority over don’t respect, trust, or like you (Russell). That’s why he didn’t win. I like Russell, but I fully understand why he didn’t win – we need more of a social relationship with others because we are social beings, after all. We form groups, alliances, and try to maintain social order. Russell invited chaos and that was his downfall.

Sidenote: I’m also really glad that a woman of color won the game. Race had very little to do in this game, but gender had a lot. Maybe it’s the sociologist in me talking, but Sandra winning is the direction American society is taking, so don’t try to fight it! haha and don’t underestimate a woman’s fight for survival.

Like I said on the first entry, this blog was really for me to write down my thoughts while the season was going so that Tarah and I can look back at them and decide how SHE can best win Survivor when she gets on the show! Once again, Congratulations Sandra. However, I’m confident that you won because you were against Russell and everyone on the Jury was also against Russell (Parv was still in his alliance, after all). She was a hidden “hero.”

Russell’s theory of the flaw in the game: People believe in human decency. And America needs to vote, too. But that’s not the game, which Jeff points out. The game is that the people you pass by and the people you hurt along the way come back to determine your fate. That’s the way life works. The people who get you to the top need to have reason to keep you there or you’re out.

Okay- I could continue on and on and on, but I’ll stop here. I’m assuming the blog is long enough.

Reward challenge:

Colby- I really don’t like you. Why are you still here? And the way you treated your brother – so mean! Funny how Jeff said that’s how he’s been acting the past 32 days: blaming others for his mistakes.

Jerri not choosing Russell? Yeah that was a bold move, which I don’t really understand. Since when have Jerri and Sandra gotten along? Good thing she apologized, but still – Russell is a cry baby and will take any vulnerability or any action not in congruence with his ‘master plan’ against you. He’s a very good manipulator, after all.

Immunity challenge:

This just shows the mental game that Survivor plays. Parv had great concentration and ended up winning. She’s a very strong competitor because she is focused and wants it more than others. And she’s a boxer, remember? So she knows sacrifice, pain, and competition.

Tribal:

Russell got way too paranoid. He’s letting the game get to his head. I mean, this is his second season in a row, but you can really start to see him break here. This could be detrimental to his game.

Way to go Sandra – she was smart to keep it. Also, she was lucky to have it! Her using that idol will give her leverage if she makes it into the top 3. She did not ride on any coat tails. She is kind of playing her own game, which is interesting. She definitely out witted Russell this episode. However, we’ll see how long it lasts and if Russell can get Sandra off. He’d be a fool to keep her around because I could even see Sandra beating Parv if it was between the two of them. I feel like the heroes like her.

Rupert:
Tarah, do everything the opposite of Rupert and you’ll win. Don’t be stupid, don’t be annoying, don’t say banal phrases dramatically, and PLAY the game of Survivor! I’m glad he’s gone. He was a joke that went on far too long. Now let’s just let Colby go join him.

Sidenote:
It’s kind of crazy how all the Survivors who get kicked off get to live together, because they are the ones deciding who to give the million $ to. Therefore the vote in the end is a result of social solidarity amongst the people voted off rather than personal decision making. At least that’s how it seems, and would make more sense. They have the opportunity to talk shit in Ponderosa! I’m sure it’s all about how bad of a person Russell is, too!

This also means that Russell only had 20 days between shows and didn’t knw the outcome of his first game (S19) until after S20 was done filming. This means he did not know he did NOT win S19 going into S20!

Without seeing how the jury voted, I think he went into S20 thinking he had won S19, when he did not. I think he would have been more cautious of his relationship with the jury members if he had known that the Jury voted against him in S19. He needs to understand that game play and strategy is just one part of the game: it is also a very social game and Russell just pisses way too many people off.

Leading up to the season finale (tonight!) I predict that Russell will find himself in a similar position and that Parvati or Sandra, being previous winners, understand the social aspect of the game and just might take the final prize.

Colby needs to go, too. He has no self-preservation, but I’m worried that if he does make it to the final 2/3, then people might for him in spite of Russell or Parv/Sandra. If a hero makes it to the finals, then I think the votes would be AGAINST Russell rather than for Colby. I actually feel that whoever Russell brings (ex: Natalie) would win because the votes would be against Russell and consequently for his opponent. However, I would really like to see my predictions be proved wrong because I like Russell. But at the same time, if he didn’t win, that would be a very good life lesson that the social game matters as much as strategy.

Candace: Don’t go against your teammates thinking you’ll last more than a few votes. It just shows you have no loyalty.


Danielle: Tarah, you must OUT LAST. That means emotions. You cannot let the game get to you. Look at Parv – she does a great job at that! I mean she concentrates great during challenges and knows when to be loud and when to not talk. Danielle was an easy target for Russell because she was so vulnerable. It’s good that Parv didn’t make a scene, but this is a time where she needs to make a decision of whether she’s “with Russell or against him.”

This is where I had one more song prepared, but they told me I had 10 more minutes and to just keep going, since they were giving all the other bands 5 extra minutes. So I decided to play a song, with Austin improvising with the melodica, that I had not prepared as well as the others – also about nature (pools of water).

Then they said “Just kidding! You need to leave!” And I said “No… I have one more song.” So I tried to play the song they promised me I had time for, until they threatened to turn my mic off. That’s when I jumped off the stage into my fans. Aren’t they great? I have really great, supportive fans/friends. Thank you for coming! It really meant a lot to see you all there. Despite being thrown off guard because of being kicked off, I had a good time. I hope you enjoyed it. So here you can watch the “kicking off” and the “denial” of the kicking off.

Not sure if I’d perform Quadstock again, but we’ll see. Maybe by next year I’ll be in a band . Maybe. (Any takers?)

So the fight for the immunity between Danielle and Amanda goes like this:
Amanda was fighting for her life in any way possible (stealing)
Danielle thought life should be fair (it’s wrong to steal – bring in morals of “i found it first”)
and Colby had no value for his life (in the game) in that he didn’t try to get the idol and gave it away to Danielle without thinking of the implications of that.

Amanda left:
She should have fought harder for that immunity idol
Also, she was on the wrong side of the numbers. This is the start of the Villains separating within their tribe. Amanda is also much more of a threat than Colby or Rupert. However, I personally think she’s too emotional and too fair to be a true Survivor. She was right in that she made too many mistakes. She’s a strong competitor, but just could not outwit the other team.

As you know, when the last 7 Survivors are voted off, they go to Panderosa, where they all hang out and just wait to attend Tribal Councils and vote for the winner of Survivor. They formed a band called The Dragonz. This was made when Coach, Courtney and J.T. were voted off. It’s just gross. Yet, you have to watch it!
